Sometimes it makes sense to state a (usually) obvious fact that many people forget when they get caught up in hype. In this industry, for instance, it`s good to remember that spectrum--those licensed radio frequencies that thousands of companies, including the telecoms themselves, are building their future on--is a limited resource.
And, it stands to reason, that an optimization-focused company--one that can make a network operator`s infrastructure more efficient without buying more hardware--has a very solid business that can well outlast the hype machine.
Which certainly sums up Schema, a seven-year-old Israeli company that received $26 million in its third round of funding in February. Unlike many start-ups in this sector, Schema has its roots outside the wireless business, in this case, optimization technology. During his PhD days, founder Yuval Davidor developed the core optimization technology the company uses today. He describes the complex algorithms as "loosely based on what we think happens in bio evolution and population genetics."
