Reducing Transport Network Backhaul Costs

In 2005, Schema evaluated a core transport network for a leading CDMA North American wireless operator using Prima™. The operator initiated the trial to judge the effectiveness of Prima™ , Schema’s highly integrated suite of products for transport network optimization, as an alternative to the operator’s manually intensive, time consuming methodologies of transport network optimization.

Project Objectives
  • Minimize recurring OpEx of a core transport network while maintaining full bandwidth and quality
  • Explore all backhaul transport scenarios of the core transport network including aggregation of DS-3 traffic into OC-n circuits
  • Identify an alternative OC-n transport solution that would significantly decrease existing DS-3 backhaul mileage with a load-balanced OC-n transport solution
Project Results
  • Schema’s Bandwidth Optimizer delivered 40% savings in the core transport baseline network. The optimized transport solution also provided 14 DS-3s of additional capacity with no additional expense and DS-3s were backhauled to an optimal location where an OC-48 solution was designed
  • Bandwidth Optimizer identified an OC-12 solution within the engineering constraints that provided a 25% cost reduction over the baseline network. This transport solution reduced DS-3 backhaul mileage by 49% while simultaneously building an OC-12 transport solution with load-balanced circuits that also provided an additional 14 DS-3s of transport capacity
Operator Benefits
  • Improved network cost– delivered over 40% overall savings to the core transport baseline
  • Provided 14 DS-3s of additional capacity with no additional expenses
  • Fast project turnaround and low overhead, allowing for rapid optimization
