Schema Shows Off Mentor for UMTS
Schema Shows Off Mentor for UMTS BARCELONA, Spain – Schema is demonstrating its Ultima Mentor for UMTS networks at the 3GSM conference this week.

The company says its Mentor “revolutionizes” network optimization by analyzing real information generated by subscribers’ mobile handsets and allowing operators to detect issues and improve the end-user experience. The UMTS release follows about a year behind a CDMA/EV-DO version.

Mentor also can increase average revenue per unit (ARPU) for carriers, the company says. If the end-user has a good experience on the network and gets a better data rate, he or she is likely to consume more airtime. “Mentor will guarantee that you get the best possible experience from existing infrastructure,” says Gur Lavie, Mentor product manager at Schema. That eventually shows up in the carrier’s bottom line, he says.

With Mentor, operators can get an accurate view of their entire network, including in-building traffic, using live data generated from the handsets, the company says.

Specifically, Ultima Mentor provides solutions to problems identified in the Radio Access Network (RAN). As subscribers move around the network and use their handsets, the phones are constantly engaged in interactions with the network that generate service reports that reflect the customer experience. Schema says its Ultima Mentor analyzes that information and reports on network performance and service quality. Mentor then delivers recommendations to optimize RAN parameters such as antenna tilts, power and neighbor lists.
